While visiting Edinburgh, Scotland we stayed at the beautiful Scotsman Hotel. Located in Old Town, the hotel is a quick walk into New Town giving best of both worlds in this historic city.
As I said, The Scotsman Hotel is located in Old Town. It would take a few minutes on foot to New Town. You definitely do not need a car! Walking is the best way to see the city as it is compact. There are also 3 Hop on Hop off buses or you can hop in a taxi. The area is filled with many stores, restaurants, and attractions.
The Scotsman Hotel
Upon arrival we were told that we were too early and had to wait for a room as there were none available. That was a blow as we were extremely tired. The lady at the front desk then tells us she has a room, but we would have to spend over 100 pounds more to upgrade to it.
Instead we killed time going to a store and buying some snacks and drinks. We also stopped inside the Grand Cafe which is attached to the hotel for some coffee and tea. Finally after getting restless we went back to the lobby and sat around until they let us know our room was ready. The concierge had already taken our bags to the room. He also toured us around the room before leaving.
Not being able to get in our room, threw off the rest of the day and honestly the rest of the trip. I had to reorganize and cancel tours. We later found out the lady charged us for checking in early, but didn’t bother to tell us. A very nice gentleman who worked at the front desk, Divyang turned our stay around. He made sure to inform us of everything, correct anything wrong that others did, and even had chocolates, macaroons and a card sent up to the room. He went above and beyond. Amazing person!
The hotel used to be home to The Scotsman Newspaper. The rooms have names like the Headline Suite, Publisher Suite, Reporter, Writer, and Editor Room etc. We stayed in the Reporter Room. Which I thought was pretty cool.
The Reporter Room was very nice! It had a view of the Edinburgh Castle and some other buildings. Outside the room is a light that show if you don’t want to be disturbed rather than a Do Not Disturb sign as well as a bell. Upon walking in there is a full length mirror. To my right was a closet with a mini bar/fridge, safe, ironing board, robes, slippers etc.
The bathroom was next to the closest. It was a very nice marble bathroom with a stand up shower, no tub. It had 2 shower heads, one being a rain shower which I loved. They had full size shower gels, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. The bathroom had a towel warmer and speakers, which I didn’t figure out how to function.
To the left of the entrance is a mini hallway that leads into the rest of the room. A comfy bed was accompanied by two night stands. One night stand had a blow dryer and a flat iron, so no need to bring either. There was a table and chair to sit at that had 2 mini bottles of complimentary whiskey. A longer table that sat below the large flat screen TV on the wall.
The room had ample outlets for plugs and USB. The Do Not Disturb button was also conveniently located next to the bed as well as an alarm clock radio that was playing music when we walked in. There was also a kettle with ample tea and coffee, tea cups, and complimentary large bottles of water restocked daily.
The Scotsman has a plethora of amenities. Wi-Fi is one and it is free. However I had the worst Wi-Fi in my room until the last night I was there. I did inform them and they did their best to fix it. They even offered to move me to a different room.
A restaurant, The Grand Cafe is attached to the hotel. They have a breakfast buffet, lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea. The food was great. We even ordered room service from here. My favorite was the afternoon tea. There was so much, we couldn’t even finish it all and they packed it up for us to take to the room!
An amazing amenity that I didn’t get a chance to check out was The Scotsman Picturehouse in the hotel that seats 48. They also have dinner and a movie packages, if you want to eat at The Grand Cafe prior to the start time. They had newer movies screening.
When my Wi-Fi was acting up it was suggested I try The Hide, a bar-lounge area that was tucked away. It was really nice and had outlets. There was also a side room to get coffee and tea. They say this is a great place to have a breakout if you are having a meeting in their boardrooms.
Having a wedding or business meeting? This is a beautiful place to have a wedding. They have different areas that you should look into. It would make a great backdrop!
Although there were some hiccups, this hotel was great. I would definitely stay here again. I hope to get back sooner than later. I hope you get the chance to go and stay at this great hotel. See more for yourself below!
